Let’s get one thing straight: most of what you see on supermarket shelves isn't actually soap. It’s a "syndet" bar: short for synthetic detergent. These mass-produced bars are made using harsh surfactants (the "nasties" like SLS) that strip your skin of its natural oils, leaving you feeling tight, dry, and itchy.
Real soap is a product of a time-honored chemical reaction called saponification.

In our Montana facility, we use the cold process method. This involves mixing high-quality fats and oils (like coconut oil and shea butter) with an alkali (lye). When these two meet, they undergo a transformation. The lye and oils disappear, and in their place, you get two beautiful things: soap and glycerin.

Mass-market brands often use the "hot process" or "melt and pour" methods because they are fast. They want to get the product out the door in hours. We take the long road.

You’ll often see brands advertising "lye-free soap." We’re going to be radically honest with you: There is no such thing as real soap made without lye.
To claim a soap is "lye-free" is like claiming a cake was made without flour. You need the alkali to trigger saponification. However: and this is the "nuance" the industry misses: there is no lye left in the finished bar.
When the chemistry is done correctly (and we are very precise about our chemistry), every single molecule of lye has reacted with the oils. What you’re left with is a gentle, skin-nourishing cleanser. Don't let the marketing fads scare you; lye is the catalyst for the magic, but it isn't the guest of honor in your shower.
