To claim a soap is "lye-free" is like claiming a cake was made without flour. You need the alkali to trigger saponification. However: and this is the "nuance" the industry misses: there is no lye left in the finished bar.

When the chemistry is done correctly (and we are very precise about our chemistry), every single molecule of lye has reacted with the oils.
